Mavis Thode
Mavis E. Thode, 84, of 219 S. Madison Street, Augusta, passed away early Friday morning, June 22, 2012, at her home in the loving care of her family and Mayo Hospice.
Mavis Elaine Thode, daughter of Bennie and Gina (Jacobson) Anderson was born Dec. 5, 1927, at home in Strum, Wisconsin. She was baptized at home and confirmed at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, where she was also married to Keith Edgar Shong on Nov. 8, 1947 . To this union two children were born and the couple farmed in Otter Creek Township, rural Augusta. Due to a farm accident, Keith passed away in March of 1952. Mavis was later united in marriage to Martin Thode at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, on October 20, 1956. The couple lived most of their married life in Augusta, where they owned and operated Thode’s Hardware. In addition to helping at the store, Mavis was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Augusta, and of the W.E.L.C.A. She also enjoyed her involvement with the Augusta Senior Center and Thompson Valley Homemaker’s Club. With the Senior Center and St. Paul Church she sewed many beautiful quilts, for Lutheran World Relief and to display in the annual quilting show at the Senior Center. Many family and friends were recipients of her homemade quilts and crocheted blankets, especially baby blankets. She also enjoyed reading, working in her flower and vegetable gardens, baking chocolate cookies, and self teaching herself to play the piano. .
She will be deeply missed by her 4 sons, Glenn (Joy) Shong of Oconomowoc, Martin Jr. (Alice) Thode of Lockport, IL, John Thode of Altoona and James Thode of Augusta; 3 daughters, Linda (Bill) Stelzer of Green Bay, Susan (Steve) Albrecht of Glenview, IL, Patricia (Peter) Zuba of Dousman; 12 grandchildren, Wandi Tillung, Gina Smith, Kyra Schauer, Leah Raja, Keith Stelzer, Andrew Albrecht, Isaac Zuba, Kathryn Albrecht, Benjamin Zuba, Michael Thode, Mia Thode, Ana Thode, 11 great grandchildren, sister, Jeanette Eide of Osseo; and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents, husband Martin Thode on March 11, 1991, son, Michael Thode, 3 sisters, Geneva Monson, Muriel Larson, Marjorie Guse and 5 brothers, Ronald, Richard, George, LaVerne and Kermit Anderson.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Augusta, with Pastor Timothy Voigts officiating. Burial will be in the East Lawn Cemetery in Augusta. Friends may call Thursday from noon until time of services at the church. The family is assisted by the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta.
