Vilas "Oscar" Sieg
SIEG, Vilas "Oscar" 84, of Augusta, passed away Monday, March 5, 2012 at the Mayo Clinic Health Systems-Oakridge Nursing Home in Osseo.
Vilas August Sieg, son of Richard and Emma (Kopplin - Zahn) Sieg, was born July 19, 1927, just outside of Augusta on the Sieg Family Farm, the farm where he lived for nearly 40 years. He was baptized, confirmed and married at the E.U.B. Church in Augusta, later joining the United Methodist Church in Augusta. He attended the Russell Corner Country School and Augusta High School. He was united in marriage to Romania Rahl on Sept. 30, 1955, with Pastor Donald Pardun officiating. The couple lived on the Sieg farm until 1966, when they moved just up the road, where they later built their present home.

For 40 years, Vilas worked for the Local Construction Union # 139 out of Eau Claire, and was a union member for nearly 60 years. He worked on Wisconsin road and bridge construction, starting by operating bulldozers and went on to operating cranes. Much of his employment was with Fehr Concrete of Eau Claire.

Vilas was very civic minded, but he not only wanted to help his community, he wanted to help his friends. For many years he actively served on the Augusta-Bridge Creek Fire Department and as a Bridge Creek Fire Warden. He was a member of the Augusta Lions Club and was awarded an appreciation award in 1992 and Lion of the Year in 1996. He was a charter member of the Augusta Snow Drifters Snowmobile Club where he was fundamental in the trail development and spent many hours grooming the trails. He served as trustee on the United Methodist Church Council and enjoyed singing with the church choir and Red Ties. Vilas retired from heavy construction work in 1992, but up until the last few years still looked forward to helping with the “wood cutting bees and working his fields, planting and harvesting. In addition to helping others he had time to enjoy life. For many years he bowled with the Sportsman’s Lanes team in Augusta, he loved going to barn dances and listening to old time music; especially the local old time bands. He looked forward to the annual Wisconsin Farm Progress Days and when it was locally hosted in 1992, he was very involved in organizing it. For 10 years, starting in 1977, he opened his home to a weekend long pig roast for family and friends, an event that still produces fond memories. He enjoyed the drives through the countryside, a relaxing pontoon ride and taking airplane rides with Wally Shong and Richard Brunzlick. He especially loved watching NASCAR and for over 25 years was a ticket holder for the Daytona 500. Vilas loved life but more importantly he loved his family, attending family reunions and big holiday dinners.

He will be deeply missed by Romania “Dolly his wife of 56 years; 2 daughters, Jeanne (Tom) Akers of Hudson, Pamela (Bob) Weiss of Augusta; 2 granddaughters and 1 grandson, Emma and Carson Akers and Roella “ Tootsie-Bell Weiss; sister, Doreen (Warren) Barberg of Eau Claire, and their children, Lynn (Larry) Lindahl, Bill (Angela) Barberg, Ann (Phil) Geyer; children of his half siblings, Betty (Chris) Hauge, Donnie (Eldoris) Perso, Carol Wilhorn, Charles (Judy) Perso, Sue (Gerry) Vold, Bob (Verna) Perso and their families; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Darrell Haskins of Merritt Island, FL, Iner and Joan Stensen of Augusta; and their families, many cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Dallas “Ace on Aug. 22, 2003, and half siblings, Mildred Perso and Clarence Zahn.
