Richard Johnson
Richard A. Johnson, 87, of Augusta, passed away Sunday, July 8, 2012, at the Mayo Clinic Health System-Eau Claire.  

Richard Arthur, son of Gust and Betty (Wiklund) Johnson, was born Nov. 25, 1924 in Lake Bronson, MN. After graduating from high school in 1943, he left the home farm to work in Minneapolis.  

Richard served in the U.S. Navy from Dec. of 1943 until his discharge in Oct. of 1946, and with the Navy Reserves until Oct. of 1951. Richard was united in marriage to Ethel V. Hansen on July 13, 1946. The couple lived in California until his honorable discharge, when they returned to Minneapolis. Richard completed his schooling in telegraphy and was hired on with the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railroad, which eventually became the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. He worked as the station agent in Osseo from Nov. of 1948 until 1956, and then in Augusta until 1976. From 1976 until his retirement in 1985, he worked for the railroad in the Hudson and River Falls area. The couple returned to Augusta in 1988, and due to health problems spent the winter months doing volunteer work in the Rio Grande Valley, at Bibleville, Texas.

Richard enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and bee keeping. He served the churches he attended in many ways; as a Sunday school teacher, superintendent, trustee, youth leader, deacon, on various church boards, as usher, grounds keeper and van driver to Mexico. Richard also served in the community with the P.T.A. on the Augusta School Board, Augusta Nursing Home Board, for a time with the Augusta Lions Club, and was a member of the Augusta American Legion Post # 291.  

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Ethel of Augusta; 3 daughters, Peggy Hahn of Augusta; Becky (Ralph) Hermanson of Kalamazoo, MI, Sandy (Thomas) Kwolek of Mankato, MN; 7 grandchildren, Peter, Patrick (Amy), Paula (Chris) Denk, Laura (James) Hankins, Michael Hermanson, Nicholas and Emma Kwolek; 4 great grandchildren, Owen, Abby, Lilly and Gibson; 2 sisters, Joy Levenhagen of Lake Bronson, MN, Carol (David) Metzler of Ames, Iowa; brother, Dale (Peggy) Johnson of Clear Lake, MN; sister-in-law, Joyce (Douglas) Fenderson of New Brighton, MN; nieces and nephews, Susan, Tressa, Wendy, Cindy, Shanda, Steven, Martin, Andrew, Anthony and Al. 
  

Richard was preceded in death by his father in 1967, mother in 1982, brothers, Ralph and Marvin, son-in-law, Roger “Jody� Hahn, sister-in-law, Florence, nephew, Fritz and niece, Patricia.  

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 13, 2012, at the First Baptist Church in Augusta, with Pastor Horst Bruenjes officiating. Burial with military rites will following the services at the West Lawn Cemetery in Augusta. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Anderson Funeral home in Augusta, and one hour prior to services Friday at the church.Â
