Barbara Raether, age 91, passed away peacefully at her home on July 17, 2026.
She was born February 9, 1935, in Ludington Township, Eau Claire County, to Bernard and Dorothy (Bellinger) Raether. Growing up in the area, she attended the Oakridge and White Country Schools, and was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ludington before graduating from Augusta High School in 1953.
Following high school, Barbara moved to Minneapolis to pursue her education, earning a degree in phlebotomy at a local nursing school. She began her medical career at an Ashland hospital, but later returned home to Augusta to lovingly care for her elderly father, Bernard, and continued to care for her mother, Dorothy, after his passing. Barbara spent many years working in the internal medicine office of Dr. Sulton at Sacred Heart until her retirement at the age of 65.
In her free time, Barbara enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, crocheting, and spending quiet moments with her beloved cat, Patches. She always looked forward to regular visits with her neighbors and found great relaxation in her bi-monthly massages. While she never had children of her own, she poured her love into her family and shared a deeply special bond with her nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her sister, Ione Lone of rural Augusta; brother, Rodney (Shirley) Raether of Ventura, California; and her nieces and nephews, Tiffany Raether, Krissy Glenz, Russ Foldy, Rachel (Doug) McArthur, David (Christine) Lone, and John (Liza) Lone. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Dorothy Raether; and siblings Alice Foldy and Bernard Raether Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta, with Pastor Jonathan Wessel officiating.
Burial will follow in the West Lawn Cemetery in Augusta. Friends may call 2 hours prior to services, from noon to 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
