Roger Francis King, 82, passed away peacefully but unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at Oakwood Health Services in Altoona.
Roger was born July 31, 1943, the youngest of 10 children born to Lawrence and Mary (Smith) King. He was raised on the King Family Cranberry Marsh in rural Fairchild, attended country school, graduated from Fairchild High School and later earned a degree in Economics from the University of Wisconsin–River Falls.
While attending college, Roger worked summers at Bush Brothers Canning Company in Augusta and briefly remained there following graduation. He then moved to Kenosha, where he spent nearly 30 years working on the assembly line at American Motors. Despite living away from home, he always looked forward to returning to Fairchild to help on the cranberry marsh, especially during the busy harvest season.
Following retirement, Roger returned to his farm near Fairchild, where he enjoyed raising beef cattle for many years. Living a quiet, independent and private life, he especially enjoyed dining out and the camaraderie that went with it. With his economic background he had always been interested in current events and following the stock market, and of course being from Wisconsin he was a faithful Green Bay Packer Fan.Â
Roger will be remembered as a no-frill gentleman with a wonderful sense of humor, especially by his sister, Ruby Silver of Odenton, Maryland; and several beloved nieces, nephews and their families.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents; 5 sisters Esther (Phil) Lato, Gladys (Herb) Henning, Dorothy (Marvin) Gragert, Sylvia (Bill) Bluem, and Arlene (Ken) Harrigan; and 3 brothers Bernard King, Julian (Constance)(Romelle) King, and Glen King.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 29, 2026, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Altoona. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service. A rosary service will be recited at 9:30 a.m. at the church on Monday. Interment will take place at a later date in West Lawn Cemetery in Augusta.
