Alvin Erdman, 96, of the Wunderhaven Apartments in Fall Creek, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, January 18, 2026.
Alvin was born on April 13, 1929, in the Rodell area of rural Augusta, son of Theophil and Lola (Klatt) Erdman. He was raised in Rodell with his two sisters. Alvin was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fall Creek, attended Rodell Country School and graduated from Augusta High School in 1946.
Following his education, Alvin entered the United States Army and served for 18 months during the Korean War. During his deployment, he was instrumental in converting rice fields in South Korea into cement runways, helping transform it into a fully developed airfield.
While dancing at Fournier’s Ball Room in Eau Claire he met Geraldine Mai. They eventually married on December 24, 1951, when he was home from the service on leave.
After his honorable discharge, the couple returned to rural Augusta, where they farmed with Alvin’s parents, who also owned the Rodell Bar. In 1958, Alvin and Geraldine built their home on the farm and in 1985 when they retired from farming they moved to Hayward, Wisconsin.
While living in Hayward, Alvin and Geraldine owned and operated A and G Merchants, a storefront business that evolved from a flea market business they ran throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota. The store was located directly across from their home. Sadly, a fire destroyed the business, forcing them to close. During this time, Alvin had also worked part time in the produce department at Northern Lakes Grocery Store in Hayward.
Earlier in life while living on the farm, Alvin served on the Board of the Fall Creek Feed Mill, having held the position of president. He was also a member of the American Legion in Fall Creek and later with the Hayward VFW.
During the winter months on the farm, Alvin kept busy restoring tractors. He enjoyed tearing them down, repairing them, and bringing old tractors back to life, often getting them to run like new. He also enjoyed hunting with his sons and fishing, an activity he especially cherished after retiring and moving to Hayward. While there, he spent countless hours feeding birds at his home, which also attracted bears; Alvin often had bears on his property, and on one occasion a bear even made its way into his home.
Following the death of his wife Geraldine, on October 2, 2010, he remained in their home until 2015, when to be closer to his children Alvin moved back to Fall Creek and made his home at Wunderhaven Apartments. From his apartment window he enjoyed watching a working farm, the various animals and birds outside and putting together puzzles.
Alvin will be deeply missed by his two daughters, Linda Wiese of Augusta and Connie Erdman of Eau Claire; three sons, Michael (Laura) Erdman of Horn Lake, Mississippi, Vernon Erdman of Eau Claire, and Gene (Wendy) Erdman of Elk Mound; along with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Virginia Bauch Staatz and Inez Arries; daughter-in-law, Lori Erdman; and son-in-law, Ron Wiese.
Memorial services will be held Friday, January 23, at 1:00 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta, with inurnment at a later date in the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner.
Friends may call two hours prior to the service, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home on Friday.
