Robert Allen Mayer, Sr., 83, of Fairchild, passed away early Sunday morning, December 21, 2025, while in rehabilitation at Dove Healthcare Center in Osseo.
Bob was born on February 14, 1942, in Black River Falls, the son of Theodore and Beatrice (Brandstedter) Mayer. He was raised with his 8 silbings in Mentor Township, rural Humbird. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Fairview, attended Sunnybrook Country School and graduated from Fairchild High School.
After completing his education, Bob began his working years on the farm of Bernard and Ann Sheffer in rural Humbird. He later spent the remainder of his career as a licensed cheesemaker, working for Ludeman’s Cheese, first working with Charles and Sandy Abrahamson, and then in Alma Center where he remained until his retirement.
“Big Bob”, as he was affectionately known, lived a life filled with passion, adventure, and love. On June 11, 1962, he married the love of his life, Sandy Kniseley, and together they built a beautiful family with their four children and a life full of cherished memories in Fairchild.
After 63 years together, Bob and Sandy still shared a bond that was truly special, spending their years together camping, traveling, playing cribbage (for a penny a point), putting together puzzles, cheering on the Packers, tending to their expansive garden, and enjoying trips to the casino.
Bob had an enduring love for the outdoors and found joy in trout fishing, squirrel hunting, and deer hunting with family and friends. In his younger years, he enjoyed bowling, snowmobiling, and ATVing, and was always up for a good game of horseshoe! Despite his rugged hobbies and adventurous spirit, Bob had a soft heart that shone through in his kindness, humor, and the love he shared with those around him.
Bob was a devoted member of St. John's Catholic Church, where his faith was a cornerstone of his life. He also dedicated many years of service to the Fairchild Fire Department and St. John's Cemetery, contributing to his community with pride and commitment.
He always enjoyed hosting their annual Easter egg hunt for his grandkids, hiding over 200 eggs filled with money each year, and an Easter basket for all the kids, memories that grandkids will cherish forever.
His warmth, gentle nature, and zest for life left an unforgettable mark on everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched, especially his wife Sandy of Strum; three sons, Robert Mayer Jr. of Chippewa Falls, Gregory (Kim) Mayer of Fall Creek, Darian (Dawn) Mayer of Fairchild; daughter Christina (Gary) Jensen of Neillsville; 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; brother Ed Mayer of Fall Creek: sister Bernadine Peterson of Merrillan; sisters-in-law, Judy Mayer of Augusta, Janice Mayer of Neillsville; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Bob was preceded in death by his father Ted in 1981, mother Beatrice in 1988, daughter-in-law Kathy Mayer; brothers and sisters and in-law, Larry Mayer, John and Dorothy Mayer, Phyllis and Joe Boettcher, Harold Mayer, Jim and Yvonne Mayer, and Francis and Paul Damberg, and Larry Peterson.
Funeral services for Bob will be held Monday, December 29th, 2025, at noon at the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta, with spring burial in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Fairchild.
Friends may call two hours prior to services on Monday at the funeral home starting at 10 a.m.
