Rick Schacht
Altoona- Rick Schacht, 67, passed away on Tuesday, March 19, 2024 at Grace Edgewood Homes in Altoona.
Rick was born to Kenneth and Geneva (Bahr) on June 12, 1956. Rick lived for sports. He participated in baseball and basketball for four years during high school. He earned Varsity letters as a Junior and Senior. During his junior year, Rick scored 214 points and helped the Fall Creek Crickets advance to the Sectional Semifinals for the first time in 33 years. The team posted a final record of 16-7, including Regional Champions. Rick was selected to the Western Cloverbelt Second Team All-Conference Squad. During his senior year, Rick scored 327 points on the team, which won Western Cloverbelt Runner-Up. Rick was selected to the Western Cloverbelt First Team All-Conference Squad, and received All-Northwest Honorable Mention honors. In baseball you could always tell when he got home what the outcome was. He was gregarious if they won, and his mitt went flying if they lost. Following high school he continued to play softball for any team that begged him…Rodell, Chicken Chasers, Andy's Cherry Inn, Buckhorn….
Rick’s active life was short lived. Just two years after graduation he had a car accident which led to a weeks long coma, resulting in brain damage. Most debilitating was his loss of balance. For years he tried so hard to walk, which led to many hard falls, being that he was 6’ 3”.
Rick was familiar with accidents throughout his life, whether he was just clumsy or unlucky. When he was only 2 he suffered a broken arm from riding his kiddy car down the basement stairs. In elementary school he knocked out his front tooth when he tried to follow his brother in jumping from hay wagon to hay wagon, 5 bales high…missed. After graduation he worked as a carpenter, where he cut a finger off.
Throughout life Rick maintained his sense of humor. His nickname was Eilert. When asked how do you spell that, he answered… E- I- lert. He often responded with witty remarks.
Rick was preceded in death by both father, Ken, and mother, Geneva. He is survived by brothers Dennis and Steve (Kathy), and sister Lu Anne Foiles, along with nieces Kylie, Jenni, Brianne, and nephew Matt, and step nieces and nephews Allen, Curt, Jodi and Becky Yarrington.
The family would like to thank the staff at Grace Edgewood and Lilly Hospice for their care of Rick, and Anderson Funeral Home of Augusta for final arrangements.
There will be no formal funeral, but a family graveside service at a later date. Now that Rick is finally at peace, we are glad to know he is back playing sports.
When you hear the crack of thunder believe it is the crack of his baseball bat.
