Edna Walker
Edna May Walker, “Eddie” 96, from rural Humbird, passed away peacefully in Comfort Care early Saturday morning Oct 14th, 2023, at Marshfield Medical Center Hospital in Eau Claire.
Edna, the 1st of three girls, was born May 2nd, 1927, to Sam and Alice (Bell) Fitzmaurice on the family farm in the Town of Mentor, Humbird, WI.

“Eddie” affectionately known by family and friends, attended school in Humbird where she graduated salutatorian of her class in 1944. As a young woman wanting to help the war effort, she went on to attend training at the Federal Communication Corporation in St. Paul, MN, from September to December of 1944. She then transferred to the Electronic Radio Television Institute in Minneapolis, MN, in January of 1945. From Minneapolis she was sent to Omaha, NE, where she worked as a communications operator and received further training in the communication field. She was then transferred to Wichita, KS, for a short period of time as a clerk typist and then back to St. Paul.

After leaving the St. Paul area she returned to Humbird and was hired as a girl’s governess at the Indian Mission School in Neillsville, WI, where she worked until she married Clifford D. Walker from Humbird on September 21st, 1946. To this marriage two children were born; Arthur Clifford (Joan) Walker of Humbird and Janet Lee Olson of Barron, WI.

Eddie was elected and served as Treasurer for the Town of Mentor for several years before working for various restaurants in the Black River Falls, WI, area Pre and Post 1-94 construction. She loved working with people and making everyone feel at home. Edna took over Walker’s Strawberry Patch in 1989 and continued the business until it closed in 2015. Her never-give-up work ethic that she learned from her parents while growing up during the depression years of the 30s served her well throughout her life.

Eddie was also known for her cooking and baking skills. Whether it was making jelly, baking cookies, pies, bread or making fudge that she eagerly shared with family, friends and employees, she always made sure that it was special. Edna also enjoyed and was proficient at needlework like tatting, knitting and crocheting.

Eddie’s outdoor interests included fly fishing for bluegills on Fairchild Pond, steelhead fishing on the shores of Lake Michigan, catching walleyes in the wilds of Canada, snowmobiling, gardening, having at least one flower in bloom all summer long and hunting the elusive whitetail deer. She also enjoyed collecting cast iron cookware.

Edna and her family attended and served the United Church of Christ in Humbird for many years and she was an avid supporter of the local Rod and Gun Club.

Edna is survived by and will be missed by her children; Arthur C. (Joan) Walker and Janet L. Olson; one grandson, Toebe J. (Sharlana) Olson of Barron; two great-grandchildren, Sierra M. Olson of Fairchild and Dylan J. Olson of Chippewa Falls, WI; one great great grandson Mason also of Fairchild; and sister Carolynn Olson of Fairchild.

Edna was preceded in death by her husband Clifford D. Walker on August 30th, 1980; both of her parents, Sam and Alice Fitzmaurice; sister Betty Harper; and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law.
