Doris Sasman
Doris W. Sasman, 100, formerly of Augusta and Fairchild passed away Monday evening December 16, 2019, at Meadowbrook Skilled Nursing Home in Black River Falls. 

Doris was born April 27, 1919, in Eau Claire the daughter of Eugene and Wilhelmina (Weining) Heck. With her family, she moved to Mondovi and then to Milwaukee, where she graduated from high school and went on to attend Teacher’s College. Prior to her marriage, she taught in Watertown. Doris was united in marriage to Pastor Merlin Sasman on October 4, 1942, at Cross Lutheran Church in Milwaukee. Since her husband had served various congregations throughout their marriedlife the couple had moved several times. They began their life together in Arcadia, Michigan, before moving to Canoga Park, California in 1946. In 1949 they returned to Wisconsin, where he had served parishes in Maple Valley, Mountain, Alma Center, and Black River Falls. From 1963 until 1991 they had lived in Fairchild when serving St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fairchild and Zion Lutheran Church in Hay Creek, rural Augusta. 

The couple moved to Augusta in 1991 and Pastor continued to serve Zion Lutheran Church until his passing on Oct. 16, 1994. In 2002 Doris moved to her home on her daughter and son-in-law’s property south of Fairchild. In 2012 she moved to Parkside Assisted Living in Black River Falls. Doris played the organ in many churches alongside her husband Pastor Merlin Sasman for 50 years and continued for 15+ years after his death. She also was a choir director, taught many classes of Sunday school, gave piano lessons and was an avid doll collector.Doris gave to a number of charities and supported several pastors in Africa and the Philippines by sending religious materials. She was also artistic and passed on her talents to many of her children and grandchildren.

Doris is survived by her daughter Marguerite and Dale Thur of Dodgeville, 3sons, Gerhart and Mary Sasman of Black River Falls, Evan Sasman of Ashland; Paul Sasman of Black River Falls; foster daughter Teala Edwards of Milwaukee area; 9 grandchildren, Sheryl(Brian )Olson, Jeffrey Thur, Jennifer Thur, Kelly (Shawn ) Chamberlain, Nichole (Travis) Hawley, Gabriel Sasman, Joshua Sasman, Leila Sasman and Patrick Edwards; 5 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Doris was preceded in death by an infant son and daughter Grace Sasman; and daughter-in-law Wendy Sasman. 

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 21, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Black River Falls. 

Friends may call at the church starting at noon on Saturday. 

Burial will be in the spring in the West Lawn Cemetery in Augusta.
