Leona Pihl
Leona M. Pihl, 98, of Augusta and most recently of St. John’s Apartments in Eau Claire, passed away early Friday evening, April 20, 2018 at River Pines Nursing Home in Altoona. 

Leona Mary Pihl was born December 3, 1919 in Good Thunder, Minnesota to Edward and Huldah (Finley) Stebbins. At the age of 3 months she moved with her parents to a farm in Maxwell, Iowa, where she attended school and graduated in 1938. Leona was unitedin marriage to Clarence Phil on October 9, 1939 in Des Moines, Iowa. Leona had worked at R.H. Donnelly Company in Nevada, Iowa and in the Printing Department at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. In March of 1957, she and her husband moved to a farm in LudingtonTownship, rural Fall Creek, Wisconsin. In November of 1968 they retired from farming and moved into the city of Augusta. While in Augusta, Leona continued to work as a Watkins Representative and retired in 1997 after 33 years with the company. Leona was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Augusta. She served the congregation as church treasurer, financial secretary, clerk, Social Ministries Coordinator, taught Sunday and Vocation Bible School, and for many years took on the role as “kitchen supervisor.” In April of 1958 she joined the Ludington Homemaker’s Club and for nearly 60 years she enjoyed her involvement with the group and also served as secretary for the County Homemaker’s Club. Giving back to her community was important to Leona and she did so by volunteering at the Augusta Senior Center and served on the Board. She also delivered Meals on Wheels, worked with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program and drove for the Triniteam Caregivers of Eau Claire.  

Leona is survived by her sister, Maxine Viers of Grimes, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, great and great great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Clarence in August of 1997; 6 sisters, Hazel Hurst, Elsie Garner, Evelyn Alder, Doris Canney, Opal Gessaman and Dorothy Pihl; and two brothers, Finley and Lester Stebbins. 

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 27, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Augusta, with Pastor Craig Lindgren officiating.  

Burial will be in the West Lawn Cemetery in Augusta. Friends may call one hour prior to services Friday at the church. 

Leona’s family would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at St. John’s Apartment in Eau Claire for making Leona feel so welcomed these past few years and especially to Marlo and Marilyn. A special thank you to the staff at Prairie Point Rehabilitation, River Pines Nursing Home and to Amanda for the respect, compassion and tenderness showed Leona at this time in her life and to the St. Croix Hospice Team for their comforting ways and support to Leona and her loved ones. 

 The visits from Pastor Lindgren and her long time close friends were also deeply appreciated.
