William Sugars
William J. Sugars, “Bill” 88, of Beloit and Ludington Township, Eau Claire County, passed away Thursday evening, Sept. 22, 2016 at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison.

William James Sugars, son of William and Evangeline “Dolly” (Felix) Sugars was born Jan. 29, 1928in Chippewa Falls. He was raised in Ludington Township where he attended Spring Valley Grade School and graduated from Augusta High School in 1945. Bill also attended Eau Claire State Teachers College and the University of Wisconsin, Madison. During the Korean Conflict, Bill enlisted in the United States Army, serving in the 187th Airborne Infantry Regimental Combat Division at the rank of Captain. He made multiple combat jumps and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he received in Munson-Ni Korea.On Sept. 9, 1953 he was united in marriage to Beulah Claire Raether at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ludington. The couple had lived in the Town of Ludington, Onalaska, and Sussex before moving to Beloit in 1971.  

Following his discharge from the Army in 1956, Bill spent his entire professional career employed by the Social Security Administration working throughout the State. He retired in 1984 as the manager of the district office in Milwaukee. After formal retirement he received his commercial driver’s license and enjoyed delivering new trunks to all points in the U.S. Bill enjoyed many hunting, fishing, and boating outings with family and friends, and traveling. He and Beulah cherished the time they spent together traveling throughout the United States and Europe. Bill was an accomplished accordion player. He encouraged his children to make music and experienced great pleasure from it.

Bill will be dearly missed by his son, Tom Sugars of Fond du Lac; daughter Angie Alseth of Beloit; 6 grandchildren, Katherine Sugars of Chicago IL, Hannah Sugars and Emily Sugars both of New York City, Nicholas Sugars of Defiance, OH, Daniel (Ashley) Alseth and Michael Alseth all of Beloit; 3 great grandchildren, Travis, Evan, and William Alseth; daughter-in-law, Janelle Sugars of Fond du Lac; son-in-law, Phil Alseth of Beloit; sister-in-law Maxie Huth of rural Fall Creek; and many nieces.

Bill was preceded in death by his mother on June 22, 1988, his father on Nov. 16, 1989; and wife Beulah on Sept. 10, 2006.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta, and from noon to 1:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.  

Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with burial with military rites in the Ludington Cemetery.
