Bernice Schiller
Bernice Ann Caroline Schiller, age 84, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours on Monday, February 29, 2016 at the Augusta Area Nursing Home. She was surrounded by her loving family and in the care of St. Croix Hospice.
Bernice was born on June 27, 1931 in Marengo, Illinois, the daughter of Edward and Mary (Stumpel) Sawallich. She was raise in Marengo, where she attended country school. When Bernice was a young girl her mother passed away and after her education Bernice lived with her older sister and helped take care of her sister’s children. She was united in marriage to Clayton Schiller on January 15, 1949 at the Methodist Church in Marengo. The couple lived in Union, Illinois, where Bernice raised her 4 children. In 1984, Clayton and Bernice moved to Palmer, Alaska to be near 3 of their children who had moved there a year prior. While in Alaska, Bernice enjoyed her employment in the school district as a teacher’s aid to pre-schooled children. In 1993, the couple decided to move back to the mid west and made their home in rural Fairchild, before moving to Augusta in 2000. Due to failing health she had been a resident of the Augusta Area Nursing Home since October of 2014.
In addition to being a devoted mother and grandmother, Bernice had enjoyed working puzzles, hitching macramé and crafting. She especially loved to cut, assemble and paint wooden crafts. She also enjoyed shopping and spending time outdoors working in her flower gardens, going for walks and taking drives to admire the countryside. She was a loving grandmother who never passed up a chance to spend time babysitting.
Bernice will be dearly missed by her 4 children; daughters, Cheryl and Gary Bell, Mary Lou and Kirby Millard all of Augusta; sons, Terry and Kim Schiller and Jeff and Jennifer Schiller also of Augusta; sister Darlene Davis of Belvidere, IL; 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; Jennifer and Will Krebs and children, Emmaline, Isabelle and Willie; Jeff and Leah Lachman and children, Carter and Rylie; Zack and Cari Bell and son Harlow; Kara and Jessie Jonas and children, Zackariah and Cole ; Tara and Jason Hilmanowski; Sam Millard and Ann Kaminski and daughter, Eleanor ; Mat and Andrea Salchert and daughter Emily; Ashley and Nick Jacobs and son Bowen Blue; Shaunna and Tydon Schneider and children, Gavin and Keekyn; and Tyler Schiller; Jared and Julie Schiller and soon to arrive daughter; Joel Schiller; and Jessica Schiller. Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; husband Clayton on March 20, 2004 and siblings, Irene Schuring and Harold Sawallich.
