Jessie Marten-Montag
Jessie E. Marten-Montag, 96, of Augusta, passed away early Thursday morning, April 21, 2016 at the Augusta Area Nursing Home.

Jessie Eliza, daughter of James and Nora (McKnight) Terry was born July 31, 1919 in the Dells Pond area of Bridge Creek Township, rural Augusta. Jessie was the daughter of a union veteran of the civil war. As a child she attended the Dells Country School with her brother and 2 sisters. She also graduated from Augusta High School in 1937. Jessie was united in marriage to Walter Marten on Sept. 18, 1937, and together the couple was blessed with their 4 children. In addition to raising her family she began her working career in Fairchild, first as a nurse’s aid at the Sunset Nursing Home and than as a waitress at the Wagon Wheel Café. Jessie was unfortunate enough to be in the café in 1959 when a large tornado hit and completely destroyed the café. From 1960 until the late 70’s she worked as a clerk at Korth’s I.G.A. in Augusta. From there she was employed for 4 years by Bud and Becky Wilkinson assisting Becky with homecare for Bud, but mainly helping Bud by detailing cars for his auto sales.

Jessie’s husband Walter passed away on their 47th wedding anniversary in 1984. She later married Craig Montag at Grace Lutheran Church in Augusta on Oct. 1, 1988.

Jessie was a warm, wonderful and caring soul who would rather give to others than receive. Helping and giving to others kept her going for nearly 97 years. If she wasn’t writing a letter or sending cards to cheer someone up she was crocheting you an afghan. Daily she wrote at least 3 letters in the morning and she never sat down without yarn on her lap. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Augusta, and active with its ladies society. She probably played more games of scrabble and cards than all of us put together and her favorite saying was, “Oh come on, just one more game.” She enjoyed her Tuesday afternoon card club in Osseo that started out years ago at the golf course and over time had moved to the Park View Apartments. If you were blessed to have known Jessie, you knew how much her family meant to her and how lucky you were to call her a friend.

Jessie will be dearly missed by her 3 daughters, Janice Matysik of Plover, Joyce (Chuck) Behm of Augusta, Judy (Jim) Susedik of Ladysmith; 7 grandchildren, Lori (Brian) Wysocki, Mike (Diane) Matysik, Kendra (Nick) Steines, Kathy (Gary) Grill, Jennifer Susedik, James Susedik, Jeneen (Shannon) Giacomino; 15 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; and special friends, Jim and Bess Whalen of Augusta.

In addition to her husband Walter passing away, Jessie was also preceded in death by her husband Craig Montag on Nov. 29, 1999, her son Jim Marten on May 25, 2002; son-in-law Robert Matysik on May 17, 1994; and siblings, Alvin Terry, Vera Travis and Olive Benway.

A visitation will be held Saturday, April 23, 2016 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta, and from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at Grace Lutheran Church in Augusta. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the church, with Pastor Jonathan Wessel officiating. Burial will be in the East Lawn Cemetery in Augusta.

In lieu of flowers a memorial will be established at a later date in Jessie’s name.
