George Sommers
George W. Sommers, 79, of Augusta, passed away with his family at his side on Monday, July 21, 2014, at Mayo Clinic Health System-Eau Claire.
George Wayne Sommers, son of George and Gladys (Chapman) Sommers was born Sept. 10, 1934 in Milwaukee. He was raised in Milwaukee, where he was baptized and confirmed into the Catholic faith and graduated from South Division High School. He married Gloria Alberti and to this union 3 children were born. On Nov. 19, 1971, he married Betty Ann (Householder) Horbinski in Iron Mountain, Michigan. The couple moved to New Auburn in 1971 where they operated a general store. Years later, George embarked on a new career as an insurance agent for Bankers Life and Casualty Company. In 1995, George and Betty moved to Augusta. Over the years, George enjoyed playing softball, fishing, and hunting. While in New Auburn, he was proud of the fact that he was able to play 3rd base on the same softball team with his 2 stepsons. He cherished the time spent with his wife, children and their families and also the foster children that he and Betty opened their home and hearts to.
George will be deeply missed by Betty his loving wife of nearly 43 years; 4 sons, Michael (Lynda) Sommers of Dale, WI, Shawn Sommers of Fall Creek, Michael (Kristin) Horbinski of Mukwonago, Mark (Wendy) Horbinski of Necedah; 4 daughters, Kathleen (John) Sifuentes of Milwaukee, Lori (Rob) Kaufmann of Florida, Diane Sommers (Paul Grafe) of Stewartville, MN, Stacey Sommers of Augusta, and foster daughter Cindy (Cory) Hanson of Abbottsford; several grand and great grandchildren. George was preceded in death by his parents and sister.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, July 29, 2014 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta.
