Larry Soland
Laurance “Larry” Soland, 90, of rural Augusta, passed away Friday afternoon Jan. 17, 2014, at his home in the loving care of his family with the help of St. Joseph’s Hospice.

Laurance Gleason Soland, son of Clarence and Nellie (Gleason) Soland was born June 9, 1923 in Matton, Illinois. He was raised in Windsor, Il, where he graduated from high school. He had attended college before entering the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving during W.W. 2 on the Ascension Islands in the South Atlantic. Larry was united in marriage to Rhonda Worthington on March 10, 1971 in LaGrange, Illinois. The couple had lived in Justice and Hickory Hills, Illinois before moving to Augusta in 1981 when Larry retired. For 38 years Larry worked as a semi truck driver, as a self employed owner-operator and when he retired he was driving for East Texas Motor Freight. He was a member of the Windsor V.F.W. Post and the Augusta V.F.W. Post # 8478. For 68 years Larry had been a member of the American Legion, first with the Windsor Post and was currently with the Augusta Post # 291, where he had served as the Post Adjutant. Larry was also a member of the Forty and Eight, with the Disabled American Veterans, and through his support and involvement with Vietnam veterans he was awarded an honorary membership with the Vietnam Veterans of America. He was also a long time Masonic member and had been a member of the Augusta Masonic Lodge.

For many years Larry enjoyed his participation in various bowling and pool leagues. He especially loved playing golf and while in Illinois had served as the President of the Cog Hill Country Club in Lemont, Illinois. During his retirement Larry gave of himself to his community and fellow veterans. With the 40/8 he volunteered at the Tomah VA Medical Center, helping wherever needed with activities to brighten the veteran’s day. In his community he spent many volunteer hours driving individuals on errands and to appointments. Larry’s various involvements all revolved around helping others and it was always done in a lighthearted, enjoyable way.

Larry will be deeply missed by his wife, Rhonda of rural Augusta; son, Terry and Kelley Soland of Augusta; daughter, Mary E. and Brian LeBarron of Augusta; sister, Patricia Ann McGahan of Windsor, IL; 8 grandchildren, Christopher (Brittney) LeBarron, Michael LeBarron, Rachael LeBarron, Bailey Hanson, Randy Allen, Sonya Warner, Raymond Perry; and 3 great grandchildren, Ryan LeBarron, Cole and Norah Warner.
